An effective food safety management system (FSMS) reinforces an organization’s control on food safety hazards and ensures that its products are safe for consumption. Published jointly by ISO and UNIDO, this handbook provides a practical approach and a wide range of information to develop, document, implement and maintain a robust FSMS according to ISO 22000:2018.

The consequences of unsafe food can be serious. ISO’s food safety management standards help organizations identify and control food safety hazards, at the same time as working together with other ISO management standards, such as ISO 9001. Applicable to all types of producer, ISO 22000 provides a layer of reassurance within the global food supply chain, helping products cross borders and bringing people food that they can trust.


WHY ISO 22000?

ISO 22000 sets out the requirements for a food safety management system and can be certified to it. It maps out what an organization needs to do to demonstrate its ability to control food safety hazards in order to ensure that food is safe. It can be used by any organization regardless of its size or position in the food chain.

ISO 22000 is the first international standard developed to certify food safety management systems, ensuring the health and welfare of consumers. This standard covers requirements for information exchange systems, risk management and control systems in an enterprise. ISO 22000 certification as a proof of food hygiene and safety of businesses in the field of food production, processing and supply. Consumers will be more confident for Enterprises with management systems reaching ISO 22000..
