What are the changes in FSSC 22000 Version 5?

In the new version 5 there is an optional quality management module, which includes all the integrable elements of ISO 9001 into the FSSC 22000 certification. This way it is possible to combine a Food Safety Management Certification with a Quality Management Certification.

FSSC 22000 V5.1

The Foundation FSSC 22000 has published version 5.1 of its FSSC 22000 certification scheme on 3rd November 2020. The main reasons for an updated version are compliance with the latest benchmarking requirements of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and strengthened requirements for Certification Body (CB) performance as part of continuous improvement.

The new FSSC 22000 V5.1’s key changes include requirements specific to:

  1. Multi-site certification.
  2. Product design & development.
  3. Food safety culture.

Organizations who are certified to FSSC 22000 V5 are expected to comply with these changes in their next upgrading audit.

Food Safety Culture

The GFSI food safety culture requirements specify elements related to: 1. Employee communication. 2. Employee training. 3. Employee performance measurement. These requirements have already been covered by ISO 22000:2018 standard. The Foundation has released a guidance document to demonstrate how these food safety culture requirements are being met.

More and more food companies and retailers are requiring their suppliers to have a Food Safety Management System that is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) to ensure consumer trust in the supply of safe food and drinks. FSSC 22000 is designed to help organizations establish and continually improve their management of food safety. It is a complete certification scheme for food safety and quality management systems, ensuring the visibility of food management up and down the supply chain.

Why do I need to certify my supply chain management system?

Certifying your supply chain management system necessitates safety compliance of your production processes, ensuring that the production is done within a safe environment. A certified management system makes it possible to identify, assess and monitor potential food safety hazards to allow end-consumers to enjoy the product with peace of mind. Risk analysis is the key to effective supply chain management, enabling companies to develop appropriate crisis control measures and expertise building.

With certifications such as the FSSC 22000, food and food packaging material manufacturers can ensure supply chain security and continuous monitoring of compliance with health and safety regulations.

A certified management system according to FSSC 22000 safeguards your products from contamination and potential liabilities. Businesses can easily build on their existing certified quality management system such as the ISO 9001 to be FSSC 22000 certified.
